Double Denim Fashion Trend: It's Fugly

Please see Fashionising.com's take on this awful double denim "trend" that has been lurking around. They beat me to the punch. I've noticed this too, and I believe this is a trend that should NEVER resurface. I do, however, know some people who would be thrilled to dust off their "denim fits" and hit the town though...so let's shut this down before they hear about it.

And SMH about their adding hammer pants to the banned list. Just saw some BCBG ones yesterday. Unfortunately, some of these awful trends are going to slip through the cracks.

Stick a fork in them b/c they are OVERdone!

I really endorse pushing the fashion envelope and taking risks, but I realize that its the BAD choices that people make that discourage others from taking a chance. Nobody wants to look like a fool and there is indeed a fine line b/w fashionable and foolish.

We often look to celebrities to dictate how a look should be pulled off, and there are some which never seem to do any wrong. Well, even a good girl can go bad.

Here is what NOT to do with Spring 2009 trends:

Slumdog Millionaire's Freida Pinto's overaccessorized dress took something that could've been elegant and chic to downright garish. There should be one point of accentuation that should draw the eye, not several.

Eva Mendes, who is usually quite well dressed, went overboard with the Spring floral. Its just too many flowers and too much fabric! This look would've faired much better in a shorter length or a larger print...and the larger print still would've been pushing it.

Geometric lines are really popular, but don't wear a trend if it isn't going to flatter you. I totally condone accentuating the positive, but this is OVERaccentuation! If you are fortunate enough to have natural curves in all of the right places, emphasizing them even further will make you look like a cariacature. And until that's a look, its a DON'T.

Oh Aubrey. This girl just tries too hard. The bright color dress alone would have sufficed, but the bright dress, belt, clunky shoe, big hair, headband, white dog...TOO MUCH.

The same K.I.S.S. method that applies to marketing often applies to dressing...Keep It Simple Stupid!

Weekend Denim Recap

The celebrities were out and about this weekend in their straight-leg denim. Straight-leg denim jeans are a great staple b/c you can wear the same pair with flats, heels, or sneakers WITHOUT necessarily paying for a tailor.

Halle was out no doubt shopping for Nahla's first birthday looking effortlessly chic as usual. No mom jeans here.

Beyonce was out looking....well, pretty regular. We don't like regular... HOWEVER, nothing about that rock is regular, so she gets a pass.

Brandy came out to Rihanna's belated birthday dinner party looking like she just heard about it on her way to the mall. Yeah, you're busted looking WACK and you know it too cause the look is all over your face. Don't get us wrong, the FIT of her jeans is cute, but this outfit is not event-appropriate at all.

*cue Jay-Z's And the winner is....*

RIH!
Why is the one with the most drama, looking the most fabulous?! Who cares! I think she may be back! This is a PERFECT example of how the right pieces and accessories make an outfit.
White tee and jeans + fabulous coat, gloves, matching heels, and shades =
WINNING LOOK

Andre 3000 / Benjamin Bixby

By now, we're all pretty unsurprised at the fashion stylings of Andre 3000. He's been seen in fur pants, turbans, and jerseys. So, it wasn't much of a surprise when he announced a year ago that he was starting his own fashion line - Benjamin Bixby.

Such images, drawn from college football circa 1935, inspired his new clothing line, Benjamin Bixby, thanks to a documentary he stumbled across on TV one night. Consisting of 70 pieces, the line is self-funded and was picked up by Barney's and Harrods last fall. (Benjamin is a fashion autodidact: He has taken advice from Anna Wintour (who invited him to a Met gala), he has sketched the clothes himself, he has been to Italian factories and Parisian textile fairs.

We weren't so sure about the market for these wildly colorful expensive clothes, but Congrats to Andre! He just had a launch party for his Spring 09 Menswear line at Holt Renfrew Bloor Street in Toronto.

I wouldn't really want my man in these getups, but I think the style would make for a great women's line...which he DOES plan to do.

Let's take a look at his wild variety of looks:

Attack of The Catsuit!!!

Oh no! Please don't tell me that the catsuit is "back!" "Back" being in quotation marks because although it is never deemed as a "DO" by the fashion gods, every few years somebody decides that its time for it to make a "comeback" anyway. This time, the offenders are Lil' Kim and Kanye West's new lady-of-the-moment, Amber Rose.

I think that Amber Rose has a great figure, and Lord knows this woman loves her some spandex, but I think she should've left this ensemble at home. Even when you have an enviable figure, the only time these should be featured is on Halloween. Lil' Kim? NO excuses, she just looks trashy.

RAWWRRR!!!!

Hussein Chalayan to Create Denim Line?

London-based avant-garde designer Hussein Chalayan has signed a collaboration deal with premium denim firm J Brand. That's right, he's doing JEANS now *crickets*. The women’s styles will be retailing in the fall.

Now this should be interesting. Avant-garde is the opposite of RTW (ready-to-wear), so this is so out in left field for me. I imagine that we'll know them when we see them though. Designers are pulling out ALL of the stops to make some $$$.

Denim Trend Spring 2009: The Boyfriend Jean

This style of jean is one of my least faves. The name indicates why...it looks like you threw on a pair of your boyfriend's jeans. I'm a petite girl, so I totally embraced the skinny jean and am deathly afraid to let it go. However, the style gods have spoken and they have decided that the loose fitting boyfriend jean is IN. So, let's make it work, ladies!

Here are some tips to fashionably wearing this jean without looking like a slouch:
* If you are going to create your own rather than buy (I'm leaning towards this
option), go to the thrift store. Or if you have a smaller boyfriend, just borrow
his...just make sure to wash them first! You know how guys do. A well-worn pair
will hang on your body better and look less boxy.
* To make the look more feminine, roll the bottom of the jeans up to expose a little
ankle, and wear w/a cute pair of sandals.
* If you decide to create a pair, rather than buy one, use a straight leg style
only! A skinny jean is going to look like a capri, and a bootcut or flare will look
pretty stupid since they flare out at the bottom.
* Balance the top part of your outfit with fitted pieces. They may be called
"BOYfriend jeans, but you're still a woman.
