A Pain in the Boob

This past Wednesday, President Obama and our first lady, Michelle, hosted a White House dinner for Mexico's first couple, President Felipe Calderon and his wife, Margarita Zavala.

Michelle looked amazing in a shimmering blue gown designed by Chicago-based designer, Peter Soronen. She's also worn one of his designs to a Presidential Ball and their first black tie dinner (see below right). President Obama looked quite dapper too!

While Peter's designs look fabulous on her figure, I couldn't help but notice that the bodices don't fit that great. I'm 99.9% sure she has dents in her boobies at the end of the night.

The Right to Bear Legs??? Absolutely!

First Lady, Michelle Obama visited the Grand Canyon with her family on Sunday, to later be ridiculed by the public for wearing...shorts. I know, you're like "why in the???" but some seem to think that her wearing shorts was "inappropriate." I'm confused here. What exactly is inappropriate about wearing shorts in 106 degree weather??? These shorts were neither too short, nor sexy, so what's the problem?
I think people seem to forget that we haven't had a first lady without cellulite and varicose veins since Jackie O, when these antiquated views of what ladies should and should not wear were prevalent. Therefore, in 2009 there's nothing wrong or "inappropriate" about a fit and toned woman keeping it classy and cool.

UPDATE: August 28: While on vacation in Martha's Vineyard, Mrs. Michelle wore another pair of shorts (albeit longer). Clearly, she isn't paying the naysayers any mind.

The Michelle Effect - WWD.com

THE MICHELLE EFFECT?: Perhaps White House | Black Market should thank the First Lady. The company, which got a huge boost in popularity last year when Michelle Obama wore its $148 print dress on “The View,” is one of the few retailers to boost its ad spending this fall. “Our new campaign is not about the past but the bright future in store for us and the overall momentum we’re enjoying,” said Donna Noce, brand president.

While the firm declined to reveal its budget, the campaign, photographed by Glen Luchford, will include a spectrum of inserts and ads, which will break in the September issues of InStyle, Vogue, Elle, Lucky, Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar. Ads will also appear on New York City buses, bus shelters and a billboard near the brand’s FlatIron location.

I would hope that White House | Black Market has showered Mrs. Obama with thank-yous and free clothes...for life.

Michelle Obama's New Haircut

First Lady Michelle Obama debuted a new hairdo courtesy of hairstylist Johnny Wright at a White House reception for country music stars last night (Charley Pride, Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss, and Union Station performed). The look is longer in the front, but much shorter on the sides and in the back.
I am really feeling it too! It makes her look younger and fresher.

UPDATE: Whoa! So apparently, we were tricked! Johnny pinned up her hair to get an idea of the look (and probably the public response) before he actually does cut it. I think the shorter look suits her more, but I can't blame them for testing it out rather than just going with the blind cut...SOLANGE! Anyway, Johnny should probably just go ahead and cut it now...

Michelle Obama isn't "Sparkly" Enough for Russia

When Michelle Obama visited London and other European cities earlier this year, she was greeted with front-page photos and rhapsodic editorials about her outfits. That was not the case in Moscow. Coverage was minimal and tended only to include reports on presidential meetings.

Even the Russian fashion industry isn’t that wowed by the First Lady. “Her clothes are modest and neutral,” was designer Denis Simachev’s muted reaction.

Fashion insiders attribute the indifference to Obama’s outfits — favorites Jason Wu, Michael Kors and Narciso Rodriguez featured prominently on the Russian visit — to anti-Americanism. “It’s part of our state policy: America is our enemy, and everything about America is bad,” commented Irina Mikhailovskaya, the former editor of Elle Russia.

What’s more, Russian taste is for clothing a bit more, well, sparkly. “A lot of Russians think that when something shines, it’s beautiful,” said fashion historian Alexandre Vassiliev, with a hint of embarrassment.

While Russian's may appreciate a more tacky "sparkly" look, I think that this is a good example of other countries' reluctance to improve international relations when America does indeed try. "Everything about America is bad?" Really??? Ok, Russia.

So Nice Gotta Wear it Twice

So Michelle Obama IS fashionably conscious of the economy! On Tuesday, she was seen exiting the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in Manhattan (above picture is of her inside). She was wearing the same floral Tracy Feith dress that she was photographed wearing on January 27th for President Obama's first day in office (take that Lanvin haters and those choosing to ignore the First Family's gesture of declining White House redecoration funds!). See her first feature of the dress below:

Um...Tracy? You need to get your website up and running pronto because Michelle just PUT YOU ON THE MAP! Congratulations!

Designers Weigh In on Michelle Obama's Style - Fashion News - WWD.com

In a discussion Sunday at The New York Times’ headquarters with fashion critic Cathy Horyn, designers Maria Cornejo, Thakoon Panichgul and Narciso Rodriguez weighed in on the diversity of Michelle Obama's style. They praised her for being modern in her tastes, high end -low end mixes, bold color choices, non-traditional sleeveless dresses, and other stylish touches will little regard to established fashion houses.

They also were in total support of her wearing her $540 Lanvin sneakers while volunteering at the food bank last week. “She has done a pretty good job of being quite democratic, much more than anyone else ever has. This is a 45-year-old career woman who has earned her own money. If she wants to blow it on clothes, why not?” Cornejo said.

I think I just acquired 3 favorite designers :-)

Michelle's Lanvin Sneakers

Apparently, some people have taken issue with Michelle Obama's high-end style. While volunteering at thee Capitol Area Food Bank for Feeding America, she was sighted wearing a pair of $540 Lanvin sneakers. Stylelist.com wants you to vote on whether or not the pricey footwear was inappropriate for the occasion. Needless to say, I think they should back off of her.

Weekend in Denim

This past weekend, the celebs were out and about showing us some cute looks (and not so cute looks) with their denim.

Our winner, Beyonce, was out with her hubby shopping in New York. Is she looking extra cute for their anniversary??? I don't know, but this is the first time that Bey is looking like she has a stylist...and I'm about to run out and get my suspenders pronto!

HOWEVER...that big silver bag with all of those gold accents in that outfit??? Uhhh yeah, it isn't doing ANYTHING for your look Bey...at all.

Rihanna sported a denim jacket and a cute pair of jeans over her travel-filled weekend...where are you going Rih? And what are you doing Rih? I SO want to know!

Now, at first I wasn't going to say anything about Bey's jeans tugging across her legs for dear life until I saw the perfect fit of Rihanna's. I think I should point this out. Now obviously, Bey is wearing a more rigid jean and not one with much stretch, but sometimes you gotta pass on doing something different and go with what's going to fare better for the overall look. And I think that with the polished look she was trying to achieve, she should've passed on these jeans. Unless she was going for a more laid-back look swapping the 6" YSL stilettos for some cute sneakers.

BTW, I'm really over Rih's 'do. Its just not doing it for me anymore. Time for the hair stylists to reconvene.

Now, I usually really REALLY love Cassie's style, but WTF is going on around the ankles of her jeans??? And with all of the detail on her shoes??? Its just too much.

UPDATE: Ah! Ok so I found out what was going on around the ankles of her jeans...the detail of her shoes!!! Here are a picture of the Balmain studded sandals she was rocking:

I feel much better now, but I still think its too much going on.

And I know, I know this has nothing to do with denim, but I just had to express my disappointment with Ms. Michelle's Prague wardrobe choice. What is this bow/belt combo? Uh uh.

The "First Hairdresser" is in the house...the WHITE HOUSE!

First lady Michelle Obama has selected a first hairdresser, Johnny Wright, 31, who was once a hairstylist in Chicago's Wicker Park and met Mrs. Obama two years ago on an Essence magazine photo shoot.

His secret to getting her hair coiffed just right? He uses a blow dryer and a flat iron on the first lady. He was responsible for her Denver hairstyle at the Democratic National Convention and her March Vogue cover.

Wright, comes from a family of hair stylists, had recently moved to West Hollywood, but he is now packing up his blow dryer and flat iron and headed to Washington!

Looks like Mr. Johnny Wright has a LOT to be happy about these days.

Go Johnny!

Michelle Obama says her husband Barack knows NOTHING about fashion!

Now I am VERY protective of my president, so if it were anyone else criticizing him about anything, I probably wouldn't post this, but this criticism comes courtesy of the woman who knows him best, one of my other favorite people and our fab First Lady, Michelle.

What is she criticizing? His sense of style! Barack may know his stuff when it comes to solving the issues plaguing the U.S., but he knows nothing about clothes nor that there is no such thing as too many shoes!

On another note, here is our First Lady at the groundbreaking ceremony for the White House Kitchen Garden. I want to look like this while I garden...

Michelle Obama's Style...Do you love it?

Michelle Obama released her official white house portrait donning a black crepe jersey racer-back gown from Kors’ spring collection and a double strand pearl necklace. She looks absolutely FABULOUS, but I'm really uncertain about her style. I think its great that you can't put her in a box, but as much as I love her (LOVE LOVE LOVE her), sometimes she leaves a little something to be desired.

Here are some looks we LOVE:

And, this has nothing to do w/fashion, but we absolutely love this look:

They are SO cute!

And...here are some looks that we DON'T love so much:
